Why is my Panasonic HDD recorder not recording?

The red REC symbol is flashing on the box screen. Trouble shooting in the manual has shed no light. Thanks in advance. My elderly parents have been using the above recorder successfully for a year now with no issues. It has recently started to not record. I am sure the solution is something simple but I cannot seem to work it out for them.
